What I Ate in The Philippines

Aside from the Korean dish I wrote for my food blog post previously, these are the dishes I ate when I was at home.

Ampalaya - It has been a long long time since I ate these healthy vegetables. My mother made this for me, as I requested it. In the UK there is no "Bitter Melon" as they call it in english. It tastes bitter, however, to lessen the bitterness, we wash them with salt and squeeze them to remove the juice. To cook this, you have to stir fry garlic, onion and tomato first. Then add an egg and stir them for a couple of minutes, then you add the "Ampalaya" vegetable. Season them with salt and pepper, stir and simmer them till the vegetables is cooked which only takes 7 to ten minutes, then serve. Simple as that. In the Philippines though, lots of people cook this differently to make it even more tasty. This dish is very well known in our country, and is really great for people who have high blood pressure. So there it is..

Ampalaya

Kinilaw - This one is, one of my mother's favourite dishes. She loves this so much! We used to eat this when we were drinking alcohol. For some reason they complement each other. It really tastes good and one of my sisters really loves this too. But as for me, my tastes have changed since I lived in the UK for twelve years ( gosh, where does the time go? ). So, sad to say I'm not really keen on this anymore. However, it's great to look back! and it is still taste good. I believe this tiny fish is called Anchovy. My mother mixes the raw headless anchovies with vinegar, onion and ginger. Then she added calamansi juice and salt. Voila! it's ready to serve.

Ginataang Alimasag - This is one of my favorite Philippines dish ever! Crabs cooked with coconut milk and Talong ( Aubergine ) vegetable. I can eat this every single day, no problem at all! I just love this dish so so so much! However crabs are high in cholesterol so do not overindulge. As for people who have high blood pressure, you need to limit yourself as crabs are high in sodium. Nonetheless, it taste so so so good! For me, it's exceptional!

Dried Fish with Lucky Me Noodles - is definitely my favourite afternoon meal without a doubt. Basically it's any dried fish that you can fry, and you eat it with hot lucky me noodles and plain rice. Yum. This will save your day from hunger! But this dish I don't think is for everyone, especially for my Scottish husband. Most Scottish or British I have known hate the smells of dried fish. It has a strong smell and they find it very unpleasant. However, for Filipinos, it smells divine! Me for instance :-)

Siomai - my sister bought these. I love siomai ( dumpling ) so much and I couldn't leave my country without eating this one. I can't say much about this dish, I'm just speechless how delicious it is. I can tell you now, this bunch of siomai is not enough for me! :-)

There's so many filipino dishes my mother made me however, I forgot to take photos of them all as I was craving so much for them and I cannot wait to dig in. But then, when I was galavanting, I couldn't resist taking photos of my food. It's a bad habit that I need to stop. Anyway, here's the photos I took when I was at the restaurants.

From Chowking

Sweet and Sour Pork Lauriat Pork, Pancit, Egg Fried Rice, Chicharap, Buchi.

Sizzling Plate

Tapsilog ( Sirloin Steak, Egg and Fried rice with side dish )

Another version of Tapsilog from Lakefront Restaurant, I just couldn't get enough of this dish. It's so so so good, my fave.

I love Gerry's Grill restaurant so much. They cook filipino food so deliciously, presentable and affordable!

"Sizzling Sisig"

"Crunchy Squid Heads"

"Pancit Canton"

"Adobong Puso Rice"

I think that was it. I was thinking if I took lots of photos of what I ate in the Philippines, this blog is going to be too long. Thank God I didn't. hehe.. I hope you really enjoyed reading this blog and hoping you don't feel hungry while reading this because I am. Until next time.. \\//
